In the book, Louis sells discarded onions (which he cut the bad parts out of) to restaurants for five cents a bag. He saved the money until he had enough to buy a dented old cornet from a pawnshop window. He practices playing until his music is good enough to start recording at 21 years of age. I really enjoyed this book. The story was great and the illustrations are rich and beautiful. I highly recommend this book! This book would be good to read aloud to 2nd through 4th grades. It would be good for several subjects - history, music, math (the money that Louis saves and keeps track of) and literature. It's also a good book to drive home the fact that hard work and saving money brings a reward at the end. |
