Has more sentimental value for me than as an anthology. This was a set text for my O levels in 1975. We studied four of the poets; RS Thomas, Betjeman, Larkin and Hughes and I've retained a quiet affection for them ever since. Lines and verses have stayed with me with remarkable accuracy. I've read plenty of each of these poets since then, and only rarely those included in this volume (except e.g. Whitsun Weddings and Thought Fox). I don't think any other editor would have made the same selections in trying to find 10 pages of poems to capture each of the 9. This is a strength and a weakness. A weakness in that more vibrant and more characteristic choices would have served as a better introduction to the poets' work. The thumbnail sketch of each poet designed to pass an exam and move on rather than serve a greater need. A strength in that it gives this anthology a nostalgic charm. I'm, once again, a disaffected fifteen year old looking out of the window of a modernist school building out towards the Pennine Hills we called The Isle of Skye and Holme Moss, and, just for a moment, engaged by something, then a spark, that later burst into a merry blaze. Only this time I read the other five as well.
