Relationships are unfinished business. Excellent chapters on Relationships as Stories: "Homo narrans" a term that places narrative and storytelling at the core of human existence Communication Networks and Relationship Life Cycles Face and Facework - saving face, including a rundown of disengagement strategies: Avoidance (I didn't say anything to the partner. Avoided contact as much as possible) Negative identify management (I told him I was going to date other people and that I thought s/he should date others, too) Justification (I explained why I was dissatisfied with the relationship) De-escalation (I told him/her that I needed to be honest and suggested we break it off and see what happens) Positive tone (I told him/her I was very very sorry about breaking off the relationship) Object relations - Secures have a positive model of self and others Preoccupieds possess a positive view of others but negative view of self -- fundamentally lack self-confidence and are obsessed with achieving intimacy with desirable others. Most likely to have experienced unrequited love. Dismissives have positive view of self, but negative view of others -- Discomfortable with intimacy, they emphasize self-reliance Fearful avoidants possess both negative models of self and others -- they lack confidence in self (and need reinforcement of another's love, and simultaneously distrust and fear intimacy with others). This creates an ambivalent orientation toward intimacy. Two very common and normal relationship processes are the coming together and forming new relationship, and dissolving and getting out of existing relationships. It can be difficult to specify a precise point at which the ordinary and often mundane experience of managing potential and actual personal relationships manifest.

Required reading material during my undergraduate education. Impressive, qualitative and applicable. After lending to my internship preceptor, she stated it will be required reading for next years interns.
