I normally do not read a lot of local histories, but this finely compiled and edited book is a pleasant exception. Williamsburg, Virginia is widely known for its history as Virginia's colonial capital; what is not widely known is this town's role as a "border" area during the American Civil War. Although no formal border is near Williamsburg, it was occupied by Union forces for most of the war so, practically speaking, served as the border between Union occupied Northern Virginia and the rest of Confederate controlled Virginia (to include the rebel capital of Richmond). I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the American Civil War, Virginia history, or American architectural history.
