Review # 1 was written on 2018-05-27 00:00:00 Mojaiyd Miah This was apparently an award-winning doctoral dissertation, and as such it works brilliantly. With a bit of judicious editing and minor re-writing it could have been a great book as well, but sadly that did not take place. There is an enormous amount of fascinating detail and groundbreaking (at the time of publication) scholarship in this work, but unfortunately due to the somewhat annoying structure of the book and the unnecessary inclusion of roughly 75 pages of incomprehensible academic gobbledygook at the beginning, it was an incredible pain in the ass to read. I may lack formal education, but am nonetheless quite well read, particularly in this field, and quite well used to academic works of scholarship and their style & structure. If I have trouble getting through a book which, like this one, is in my primary area of interest, most others will also- unless, of course, they are the sort of superhuman genius who would make Albert Einstein look like a dumb ass... The bottom line here is that, for the general reader, there have fortunately been a number of books published in the intervening years since this one came out nearly three decades ago which cover the same events and issues in a significantly more readable fashion. Unfortunately, given this book's detriments and cost, those of us who are or aspire to become specialists in the history or politics of South-East Asia, the foreign relations of the U.S. during the Cold War, or other relevant fields, essentially have no choice but to at the very least read this book if not purchase a copy...
