Review # 1 was written on 2017-01-16 00:00:00 Jason Mcbride Good and helpful book if you are studying Shakespeare's Tragedies or Renaissance Literature in general. Full of interesting and useful information. Also, the last part on Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Mcbeth, comprising around 130 pages, guides you through the entirety of those plays with particular reference to the characters' main features and their passions as both cause and result of the plot and their own actions. Furthermore this study also covers a whole range of Renaissance philosophical texts that are linked to Shakespeare's works and their interpretation.

Review # 2 was written on 2013-08-18 00:00:00 Julia Santos This book is a really fascinating overview of Renaissance philosophy, medicine, and the four humors as well as Shakespeare criticism. It applies these ideas to Shakespeare's four big tragedies--Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth--giving a unique insight into the plays. It really helped my understanding of Othello in particular. There's about 100 pages of setup before you get to the discussion of the specific plays. But for me the explanation of Renaissance thinking was the most unique and interesting part of this book.
