This is a very well balanced mix of history, culture, architecture and practical guidance for eating, sleeping and getting around to do the sightseeing. Copiously illustrated with photos, art and maps. I was particularly taken with the treatment of Indian cuisines, for there are many, setting out the origins and variety of dishes including local specialities. But the test of a guide is how good it is when you get there. This one is excellent. It made the Red Fort come alive and nearby Chandni Chowk. I shall never forget the three rikshaws carting our group, at some pace, deeper and deeper into the crowded narrow streets - I felt absorbed into India that day. DK enriched the experience.

Though heavier than Rough guides or Lonely Planet guides thanks to loads of glossy pages with pictures, the DK Eyewitness ones I find have better maps and descriptions as well as list of things to see, do and visit. This one focuses more on Delhi and dips into Agra and Jaipur, but is a good enough guide for Beginners who want to cover all the main sights.
