Review # 1 was written on 2011-08-24 00:00:00 Jon Ryan The 1976 school children's protest against the apartheid educaton system in South Africa became one of the pivotal moment of modern South African history, shifting from a localised protest baut having to learn Afrikaans, seen as the language of the oppressor, in townships south west of Johannesburg (hence, Soweto - South West Townships) to become a major national anti-apartheid rising. This contemporary journalistic account puts that rising in its broader South African and international contexts. It is highly recommended for anyone exploring those issues now for its insight, its immediacy, and its passion, as well as its placing of thr Black Consciousness Movement at the centre of the struggle and revealing the marginalisation of the older more ossified liberation movements - the African National and Pan-Africanist Congresses, although thr ANC's dominance of post-apartheid South Africa tends to see a different story told. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-01-02 00:00:00 Joseph Stalin Outstanding, immediately practical, eminently digestible little tome with (unfortunately) direct application to the current state of the world in 2017. I'd call it a "quick read" except that it's so jam packed with profound passages that it took a while to get through, what with having to stop and reflect and copy a paragraph or page into my journal. |
