Read this because I am trying very hard to track down a book I read while in seminary in the 1980s which I thought was British, Victorian, about 3 students at Oxford or Cambridge getting ready to be ordained and discussing which demographics most needs priests: rich, poor, in between. Each of them becomes a priest to one of these groups. The priests to the wealthy and the poor lose their way while the other guy does all right. But after reading this exhaustive survey of novels about clergy in the UK, I wonder if the book I am looking for was written during the Edwardian afternoon of the 1920s and took place in NYC!! In any event, this was a fascinating book and my TBR list became much longer as a result of reading it.

A comprehensive account of novels of faith and doubt in Victorian England. Good for historic context re: tensions between science and faith, and the various arguments between different Christian factions.
