Review # 2 was written on 2017-08-26 00:00:00 Margaret Brown This book holds a special place in my personal canon because it's the first picture book I read aloud to a group of kids, as a librarian, that allowed me to share their delight. Seibold (and Walsh)'s books are some of the weirdest out there, but because they're totally unapologetic and have absolutely no ulterior motives, they are, IMO, some of the best picture books around. Mr. Lunch is a black and white dog who owns a bird-seed company. He borrows an elephant's canoe and sails it all the way to Venice, where he has it customized, and returns it to the elephant in better shape than when he received it. That's it. That's the whole book. In between, he has a zillion weird encounters and still somehow manages to captivate little kids and make their librarian smile, and feel like she's stumbled upon a very underappreciated treasure. J. Otto Seibold, along with Jon Agee and a very small contingent of others, are in a class by themselves in the world of modern picture books. |
