Review # 1 was written on 2012-12-30 00:00:00 Mary Schneider When Hurricane Irene hit Vermont in 2011, I was one of two girls working at the Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site there. We were cataloguing and digitizing the collection as part of a contract internship. We also gave public guided tours so we were the subject matter experts. The roads washed away on the mountain leading to civilization for three days so all we had was the wood resident cabins built in the 1920s, and the residents of two nearby homes who worked the property full time. For those three days, I sat on a porch in the sun and read this book while we waited for FEMA and construction to repair the roads. No technology, no A/C, no stovetops (I cooked soup in a pan on a wood block over an outside fire the first night) no phones, not even gas for my car (I was living on a prayer that fumes would get me to the gas station when we would be able to leave) I have never enjoyed isolation and a book so much because of those circumstances. Given I wouldn’t have probably liked this had I read it at home, it’s missing a star. This is the official book the site also recommended at the time to the public for a history on “my pal Cal” Its very interesting. |
Review # 2 was written on 2015-08-31 00:00:00 Jennifer Robertsen Nice summary of the accomplishments of the presidents up to Nixon. Great portraits of each one. A little biased as far as the 34-37th presidents as it is kinda issued by the govt. Glad I read it. Will now rip it up and put the portraits on the wall. |
