An intelligent and informative look at the concept of love and desire (both homosexual and heterosexual) in the Ottoman empire, mostly in the 16th century - and with parallels to Europe at the same time (or more exactly examples from Italy and England) to show a world that had both similarities and differences. And as the authors correctly point out, there are greater similarities between Ottomans and Europeans back then, than it is between us Europeans now and then. Given the evidence I would say that's quite true. It is an interesting study, using mostly early-modern Ottoman love poetry as starting-point and food for discussion - and it's not something that has been done much at all. That, the fascinating subject in itself, and the fact that the book is very well written and presented, gives the reader a great experience.

It was written by academic language so it may be inconvenient to read fluently. But in general it contains interesting facts about love, romance, relation and those reflection to literature.
