Hudson Lowe is usually depicted as the British martinet who finally put Napoleon in his place by making his life on St. Helena a living hell. Gregory paints a very different picture of the relation between captor and captive. Napoleon, the indomitable warrior, never stopped scheming to win his release from the windswept plane on the remote island and it was the hapless Lowe who was the victim of his relentless machinations. Essential Napoleonic reading.

An intimate portrait of the major players attending the Congress of Vienna - Castlereagh, Metternich, and Talleyrand - as well as the women in their lives. Great for pairing with Teresa Grant's novels.
