Review # 1 was written on 2015-03-01 00:00:00 Jean-Francois Leblanc Hudson Lowe is usually depicted as the British martinet who finally put Napoleon in his place by making his life on St. Helena a living hell. Gregory paints a very different picture of the relation between captor and captive. Napoleon, the indomitable warrior, never stopped scheming to win his release from the windswept plane on the remote island and it was the hapless Lowe who was the victim of his relentless machinations. Essential Napoleonic reading. |
