Summary This book takes us through each letter of the alphabet while at the same time taking us through the four seasons in the north woods of Minnesota. For each letter there is something specific to life in the north woods and a paragraph description of that item. Identify the characteristics from the text that support the specific genre The book is clearly an alphabet book because it moves from A-Z systematically. The book is driven by Bowen's beautiful wood cut illustrations. As an alphabet book we could consider it an early childhood book too but because the text that goes with each letter is fairly detailed, it could readily be enjoyed by older children as well. Identify specific concepts that could be integrated into the classroom Woodblock print making as an art form; how life in the north woods is unique; phonics; drawing parallel's to one's own life ("what would I make an alphabet book about if it focused on my community?"); local artists (Betsy lives in my community). Provide any other suggestions that would be useful regarding literary content, reading level, and other ways in which the book might be integrated. In spite of being an alphabet book, the text is fairly complex so it would not work for a very young child to read it to themselves. This too would be a fun format to model a group book project on. Could work well in conjunction with Betsy Bowen's Northwoods Counting Book. Of note: I first met Betsy and bought this book in Stockholm, WI probably around 2002. She was at the Stockholm Art Fair and we lived in the area, a little further down the Mississippi. We were familiar with her books because we loved the great north woods which she depicted so well. Many years later we moved to the north woods and Betsy is now a friend. I count myself lucky!

I have never been to the Northwoods, but I have a deeper understanding of the life lived there via this thoughtful and adventurous ABC concept book. My four-year-old sat enthralled and asked questions throughout our snuggle-time read enjoying the year-in-the-life of the main character proving, once again, how valuable picture books are at all ages.
