I bought my copy of Bill Russell's American Music shortly after it was issued. 25 years later, it is battered and held together with tape. Many pages have handwritten notes I have added as more recordings have been issued. What I'm saying is that this is one of the most-used and most-enjoyed books on my music shelf. Bill Russell, a composer and jazz historian, formed the American Music label in the 1940s to document the remaining first- and second-generation jazz musicians of New Orleans. The best of his recordings are remarkable - some of the best traditional jazz ever captured by a microphone. (Doubters should check out "Careless Love" or "Midnight Blues" by Bunk Johnson, on the album King of the Blues.) Hazeldine's book is part discography and part journal; most of the text is taken from Russell's notes, written after each session. The discographical information will be invaluable to jazz geeks, and Russell's commentary is fascinating. At times, particularly when the prickly, erratic trumpeter Bunk Johnson is involved, Russell's notes read like a novel. There is a CD of American Music rarities included with the book. The CD has subsequently been issued separately, as An Introduction to American Music; it's available from the Jazzology company, which now owns the rights to American Music. I suspect that anyone interested in New Orleans jazz will find this to be a rewarding book.

This is the 1950s Penguin edition and shows its age in some places. Rex Harris has decided opinions on what counts as real Jazz, but as long as you treat this as a representative of conventional attitudes of the period it is an interesting and informative history of Jazz music from 1880s to early post-war period.
