John, we get it, you speak French! Save Mormonism Unvailed and the Nauvoo Expositor, this is perhaps the hardest-hitting of the early exposés of Mormonism. After being kicked out (or concluding his infiltration, depending on who you ask) of the Mormon church, Bennett reveals the shady dealings of Joseph Smith's inner circle of church dealings; with accusations of adultery/seduction/spiritual wifery, corruption, murder plots, and various court testimonies of the Missouri war, it is easy to see how this precipitated Joseph's untimely death. This book was put together pretty hastily by Bennett, and it shows. It's mostly a mish-mash of newspaper articles, sworn affidavits, court testimony, and various pieces of nonsense like Joseph's phrenology reading. Bennett interjects here and there, but seemingly more to show us how erudite and flowery he can write; I wish he hadn't left the imparting of information to others for the most part. The credibility of Bennett will vary depending on the audience, so I'll forbear giving my opinion there. But this is a vital volume for the historian who wants to get the full picture of Mormon history.
