CHRISTMAS PIE, Alice Duncan, 2009 Polly MacNamara had dreams, just as other girls her age. But her life was centered around caring for her mother, who was badly injured in an explosion on a ship that killed her husband. Polly had a typing job that paid for both of them to live quietly. They had no extras, but they scraped by. Her life would change after a chance stop in a little shop in Chinatown, looking for a small Christmas gift for her mother. There an old woman would press an ancient-looking coin into her hand, altering her life path forever. This is an unabashed rags-to-riches Cinderella story, full of warmth and love, with a bit of Christmassy mystery thrown in. A sweet tale that is to be savored and enjoyed on those days when life is just too much!

A nice romance set in San Francisco in 1899. It has a bit of a magical twist to it, along with a hint of the Chinese flavor that is a part of that town. Polly is a quiet secretary to a handsome lawyer. When she receives a Chinese coin as a gift, it seems to have mysterious powers. Are her dreams really coming true?
