Brilliant, potted histories of the composers' lives, with fab illustrations. Who could possible resist the image of Bach as a toddler, starkers at the top of the staircase, fascinated by his father's viol playing downstairs? Or Mozart being kicked down the steps of the ducal palace, one shoe flying off and his violin smashed to pieces? These books really humanise the composers and encourage people to listen to their music.

Charming, witty illustrations by Martin Aitchison, and enjoyed the text too,. Had to smile at the author's comment that Bach's 2nd wife, Anna Magdalena, who bore him thirteen children, and, as a skilled music copyist, copied many of her husband's compositions, also often played the harpsichord in the evenings for her weary husband. Strikes me she may have been a wee bit weary herself - LOL! Sad to read of Beethoven's difficulties and lonely later life. All of these three created so much beautiful music for humanity yet died in relative penury. The book tells us that Bach eventually became totally blind, and died from paralysis. There was no funeral for him, merely a simple burial in the cemetery of St John's Church in Leipzig, and all the Church Council said was, "Herr Bach was a great musician, no doubt, but now we want a schoolmaster:.
