I found it completely unnerving how the author talks down to her readers, explaining terms, people or situations as though we were all ten years old - tops. It's nice that she states she's a trained psychologist and therapist but frankly it always makes me feel very weird when therapists start inventing their own terminology, "science" and rules the way this author does. (Gray zone etc.) It gives me a creepy sort of Scientology feeling because this is something they're quite big on, redefining known words or creating new ones no one understands but them. This is what reading this book was like for me. I know some more successful psychologist authors do this in order to "bind" the readers to them and make it virtually impossible to read anything else anymore but of course I do not know if this is the case here or if the author is really just as annoyingly arrogant and blasé. I'm not saying this book has no merit, the entire subject of emotional unavailability in romantic or also other relationships is utterly fascinating to me, yet in my personal opinion there are books that are better written than this one that don't make the reader feel like an imbecile loser. Just a personal preference thing I surmise!

I picked this book up by chance during a visit to Barnes and Noble bookstore in downtown Minneapolis with friends who were visiting from the Phoenix area in the middle of one of our coldest months. Sorry Kathy and Kelly! Emotional Unavailability is truly one of the most helpful, empowering books I have ever read! I loaned my original copy to someone and they didn't return it, so my husband ordered another copy for me. Realizing that I have been involved with emotionally unavailable people most of my life, but I desired change and began to realize that change begins with me! Reading this book has given me some very helpful tools! An interesting caveat is that after reading the book, I read the back cover and discovered that the author actually was living in the very same city as me! I would love to have a face to face discussion with her to share how much the book impacted my life! My take away was that I do not have to live in a world of emotionally unavailable people! I am learning to be more assertive in telling others what I want and how I feel.
