Review # 1 was written on 2012-08-21 00:00:00 Carmon Thompson A sympathetic account of a less-known French thinker who did his main work on Brazilian religions (especially Candomble). Despland interweaves Bastide's thinking with his life experiences in a convincing way. What is missing is a clear section on the relevance of Bastide's work outside the specific field of Brazilian studies. Also, I was surprised to see no references to The Social Origins of Religion.
