Review # 1 was written on 2020-11-20 00:00:00 Victoria Wyatt Although this is billed as a 'pictoral' history of women healers, it's actually a normal-ish book regarding the matter, with some pictures throughout. I was expecting a coffee table book or something similar. This turned out to be much better than expected. The author goes through mostly Western/European/US history of women as healers. There are many small page or two page biographies of specific women (Hildegard of Bingen, Florence Nightingale, Trotula of Salerno, many more), and then larger sections (Goddess archetype as healer, hospital foundations, women as doctors through history, herbal medicines and connection to 'witches', midwifery, many more). I was impressed with this one, and learned quite a bit. Worth the read, but not if you're looking for a light 'picture book.' |
