I also write about fantasy literature, although my focus is the adult market. I hadn't gone through this volume before because I thought the focus would be much younger than what I needed. I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not too excited about the choice of categories into which works are sorted here. Some are good, but the distinctions between others are highly unclear or are so large as to be meaningless: "High Fantasy: Alternate Worlds or Realities"? "Magic Adventure Fantasies"? And while the annotations are solid, they're plot-heavy and don't cover other appeal factors as much as one might want, making the books sound same-ish. What gets the five star rating, despite any shortcomings, is the sheer coverage of this volume. It's excellent! Not only are all of the children's authors up to its pub date included, but most of the adult authors are as well. That's very wise, as fantasy is definitely a field where readers cross over the age gap. I would recommend that this author take the final steps of adding in the few adult authors who aren't included here (there aren't many who are missing) and market this to the entire fantasy reading community. It's the closest I've seen to a bibliography of the entire genre. This wouldn't be a bad investment for a family of fantasy lovers, although the price tag is hefty, so this is mostly for libraries or other institutions. (There are less expensive guides, more opinionated guides out there for the individual reader or for the circulating collection of a library. Of course I'm partial to the Read On... series). If your library is going to invest in one large guide for fantasy fiction, this is the one I would pick. You'll have to point out its utility to the adults, but for both support of collection development and a reference tool for the most voracious fantasy readers, this will get the job done.
