Usually I would complain about too much text in photo books. Not here. Millstein's texts and Bernhard Hermanns good photography is apart yet interwoven in an intriguing and interesting way delivering a moody picture of what was New York then, and, for the current reader, is now relegated to pockets of many boroughs of this city that became more like other american megacities and less, well, less than the New York of then. To the delight of some. To the dismay of some. Together they construct an impression that lasts. Millstein's introduction and ending texts are especially personal and therefore real. The captions seem to have been written first without and later looked at with the photographer which renders often great pockets of texts. Some pictures have no captions at all. A good choice. Hermanns snaps are streetphotografic. My favorite is a snap of a playground at 139th.

This book of personal observations about New York City is of interest mainly because it was written in 1872. The reader gains a contemporary view of the city in the midst of a historical period of stupendous population growth due to its waves of immigrants. A lot of the information is fairly general, though, and the author is not shy about providing his opinions about his social inferiors. It might be regarded as an oral history.
