This book describes the main kinds of black representation in American media, generally under music. Boyd writes about the palatable, filtered representation created by Bill Cosby, a less common Afro centric representation seen by groups such as Arrested Development, and of course, gangster rap. He has a lot of interesting points (such as wondering if positive representation is used as a way to get people okay with the status quo instead of wanting more or wondering why some ethnicities can romanticize crime culture but others can't), but some of the context was lost on me for the more obscure references. I enjoyed the chapter at the end about basketball, with "good" athletes and outlandish ones and how the press treats black athletes.

This book was way better than H.N.I.C. Am I Black Enough discusses popular cultural production and a class analysis that caused them to create gangsta, as a means of upward mobility but also the class position of the people who owns the means of production leads to further exploitation of the disadvantaged who got rich from their producing of gangsta culture. He also extends the discussion and talked about sports, mainly basketball to say how sports have become main stays in popular culture.
