Review # 1 was written on 2016-05-10 00:00:00 Erik Mjanger Props to Girshick for her critical feminist (and, I would argue, fairly anarcha-feminist) analysis of this underreported, ignored, and stigmatized social issue. Her methodology situates how woman-to-woman sexual violence is influenced and enabled by hierarchical structures of dominance, including patriarchal and heteronormative systems of oppression like homophobia. She also systematically destroys the myth of the lesbian utopia, and the ways in which feminism and notions of "women-only safe space" have contributed to silencing survivors of woman-to-woman violence. The chapter on linguistic issues affecting lesbian and bi survivors of queer sexualized violence is totally groundbreaking. This is also the only resource on this topic I have encountered (besides zines) that challenges myths surrounding abuse and butch/femme relationships, gender-role socialization, queer survivors of childhood abuse and date rape, and individuals who practice consensual BDSM. Highly recommended, especially for the final chapter that provides a concrete vision for service providers and individuals seeking to address these issues in their communities.
