A Very Thorough History Inside the Circle reads like a doctoral thesis. I did an internet search on the book and found out that, indeed, it was Dr. Hemenway’s thesis for her Doctor of Ministry degree. The first six chapters of her book are, in my opinion, very long and difficult to get through. They are focused on the history of CPE and the history of groups in CPE. For me, the real meat of the book is Chapter 7, which I understand to be the application and evaluation of her doctoral project. According to Dr. Hemenway, the group experiences of CPE are frequently the most “powerful and formative aspects of the student’s experiences.” When speaking about their CPE experience, former CPE students have their strongest feelings centered on “the group.” Hemenway believes that too often CPE educators have not clearly developed their theory and practice of group supervision. Therefore, she wrote Inside the Circle to develop a “coherent theory of group experience for CPE.” Skip the first six chapters and read chapter seven. There is some valuable insight to group dynamics there.

This is an important book for anyone interested in the history of Clinical Pastoral Education, particularly the small group process that takes place in CPE groups. Hemenway is very thorough in her historical presentation. She also provides her own group as a case study, looking at Bion, Winnicott, Freud and others. For anyone interested in becoming a CPE supervisor this book is a must read. It would also be helpful reading for those in advanced training.
