Review # 1 was written on 2019-12-17 00:00:00 Michael James The book is well worth a read. It does a good job making the case for how the US has become an empire via economic manipulation, unilateral military action, and state sponsored terrorism in Central and South America. It then discusses the mixing of US government with references to an amorphous god (notice that Yeshua is never mentioned) which builds a civil religion around nationalism and a "divine directive". The civil religion has much basis in fear and has been used to gain support for the "War on Terror". This civil religion is dangerous, as it can cause the "good news" to start being associated with government and it's agenda, rather than the peacemaking talked about by the Messiah. My biggest gripe with the book is how he handles the theology of a violence in the Tanakh as juxtaposed to the non-violence of Yeshua and his ministry. For discussion on messianic non-violence I would check out another work such as "Caesar and the Lamb" by George Kalantzis. |
