Simply a classic. Stewart might have some old-fashioned ways compared to today's Trout Unlimited member releasing their catch and maintaining a sensitive approach to the fish, but Stewart isn't devoid of compassion for the fish. This books covers the flies, method, and fishing techniques used to catch fish in an efficient manner. He's not a fish apologist and boils the process down to the things needed to make it happen. There is no waxing eloquently about rolling fields of gold or any such thing. It's all about fishing with a little thrown in about fishermen and practices like netting which he abhorred. It was a refreshing view into fishing as it was done by a serious fisherman of his era. I went into the book without a lot of knowledge of Stewart the man and I left with a little bit better understanding of who he was. And I do think he would have been a member of Trout Unlimited if he was alive today (and an American instead of an Englishman).
