I think it's easy to forget what carnage lies in the wake of "converting" native peoples to Christianity, and the cultural impact it had on their lives. Stockel does a good job portraying the Chiricahua as a strong-willed people who didn't necessarily embrace the idea of Jesus due to religious fervor, but used the idea to their advantage in order to appease White settlers. The syncretic tones of Chiricahua religion are rampant, and it's amusing to find that these Apaches were actually using Jesus and other Christian symbols to praise their native gods. This book was an awesome read; It not only showcased an interesting (albeit crazy) part of American history, but highlighted the unique adaptation skill of Native Americans.

Just started today. The book tells the story of the Chircahua Apache in a theoretical framework. Highly recommended to anyone interested in syncretism, religion, the psychology of group identity, or Apache history. EDIT: The book is very, very descriptive. Descriptive to a fault. And it doesn't provide enough dates for a serious study. A mediocre book, in my opinion.
