Shelby Schumaker 12-31-12 December Goodreads book review 9H4BD The book Developing Mental Toughness by Graham Jones and Adrian Moorhouse MBE it is non-fiction and the copyright date is 2008. I rate this book 5 stars. It was a great mix of everything and really gave me a great idea of how to control myself as an athlete. I recommend this book to anyone who plays sports or is feeling high levels of pressure. The authors give examples of personal experiences which makes the book easier to relate to. This book has taught me many things from what mental toughness really is, how to handle high levels of stress, believing in yourself, having results of your motivation, maintaining focus, and asking yourself frequently.. Am I really giving it my all? The small tips that are given in the book were very relatable and have helped me greatly with my school and gymnastics. The main thing that the book has taught me was asking yourself frequent questions. Are you setting short term and long term goals? Are you reaching these goals? Are you working hard? All of these questions really made me think and helped me reach many of my goals. This book is a quick and easy read that I feel you can enjoy and take to heart. A frequent topic that was brought up quite a bit was are you a leader? You can be so mentally tough but if you have no leadership, you will not get very far. One of my favorite statements Graham Jones brought up was "His motivation became more to do with avoiding failure" (19). That was one of the statements that has helped me and stuck with me. I personally do not like to fail and it bugs me when I do. The book Developing Mental Toughness by Graham Jones and Adrian Moorhouse MBE is a great easy read that will really make a difference in an athlete's life.

This book contains a great deal of information that will undoubtedly be very beneficial to many people. I did learn about several topics related in some fashion to developing mental toughness. I would have preferred the authors to include 'more meat and less gravy' as it were. That in no way is to imply that this is not a well-written, or informative book. It certainly is both of these. But as is the case with so many "Self Help" and "Management" books, this one expended a great deal of effort working it's way to the crux of the matter. Even so, for anyone at the first stages of dipping their toes into the shallow end of the pool, this book is a really good beginning point. I was hoping for something that more vigorously addressed the end of the pool a bit closer to the high dive board.
