A decent collection of essays - not terribly scintillating, nor that enlightening overall, but with a few rather valuable inclusions. Several of the earliest essays offer various critiques of the work of Charles Sellers and E. P. Thompson - whether effective or not, I largely couldn't say. For my part, among the most interesting essays were those by Richard Carwardine and Kathryn Long. Carwardine provides an incisive look at the financial considerations at stake in the North-South schism within the Methodist Episcopal Church in the antebellum period, while Long scrutinizes the way media coverage of revivalism (specifically, the "businessmen's revival" in the 1850s) was shaped by financial considerations (highly relevant to assessing media treatments of religious phenomena our own age). But, while the book did contain some material concerning the changing means by which churches obtained their funding following disestablishment, much more could have been said - and, I think, should have been said here.

Very good on the topic of nineteenth century agricultural labourers. Helped immensely with my master's essay--my lecturer recommended this book as a must! At points it gets a bit hard to read, but in academia, what book isn't? Would definitely recommend if you are researching about the rural working class in nineteenth century England, especially in regards to agricultural labour.
