Review # 1 was written on 2013-03-27 00:00:00 Daniel Murphy Fascinating analysis of women's bodybuilding as feminist activism. Women taking up space, blurring the lines between feminine and masculine, and being role models for other women seeking to claim their own strength. Sometimes repetitive, and a little dense in places. Almost feels like four books in one, with Heywood's response to the 1990's conservative backlash, the difficulty of photographers capturing the full spectrum of female bodybuilding and marketing it to a wider audience (without resorting to soft-porn style images or cynicism), racism in how white women bodybuilders are portrayed differently than how women of color are portrayed, bodybuilding as a means of overcoming abuse and unleashing our inner monster...There is a lot here. The ideas are definitely worth contemplating, though a little editing might have made it more powerfully concise. |
