Review # 1 was written on 2021-01-27 00:00:00 Marc Gasser Wiarda is a conservative guy - nowhere is this more evident in his assessment of Marxism in the future of the Left in Latin America - but this book was very useful for me as I tried to understand the effects and organization of medieval and imperial Spain, the Conquest and Reconquest, the Bourbon reforms, and the growth of the Napoleonic empire during the consolidation of colonial rule. Parts of the book are repetitive and occasionally it drags, but it really did help me develop a somewhat coherent understanding of complicated historical processes that didn't/don't actually interest me much at all. |
Review # 2 was written on 2010-08-24 00:00:00 Thomas Jennert Excellent summary and analysis of Latin American political culture. A little dry and hard to follow at times (especially when trying to fly through it for a thesis), but if you allow yourself enough time and patience, you will discover a gold mine of intriguing insights into Latin America's tragic, turbulent history. |
