A thoroughly interesting book that examines Nietzsche's use of Darwinian ideas on natural selection. Whether you are familiar with Nietzsche or a newcomer to his thoughts, this book offers a thoughtful interpretation that tackles some of the misconceptions many hold about the philosopher. If I have one potential criticism, however, it would have to be this; in presenting Nietzsche in a manner that is perhaps more palatable to the modern reader, in softening his edges, I can't help but wonder if Richardson falls into the trap that Nietzsche himself warns of. That is, Nietzsche believed that our values are nefarious because they have become so ingrained in us by society as to be nigh-unquestionable. It is for this reason, among others, that he rejects them, as Richardson argues. But Richardson also presents Nietzschean thought as offering a way to SALVAGE our values (after, of course, a thorough examining of said values through genealogy.) Admittedly, I will need to think more on this issue, but my fear is that, in presenting Nietzsche in this way, Richardson downplays how drastically the man wanted individuals to thoroughly reject the morals and values of a modern society. That quibble aside, however, the book remains a good examination of Nietzsche's philosophy that places him in a scientific context and offers support for his arguments.
