Review # 1 was written on 2013-06-21 00:00:00 Justin Minor This is an excellent and engaging book about the Great Allegheny Passage! It describes the ancient geological history of the region, explaining how the mountains and rivers of Western Pennsylvania were formed. It also describes the battles that were fought along the Great Allegheny Passage in the 1700's, and the victories and defeats of George Washington, General Braddock, and other well-known leaders. The book goes on to tell about the settlers who used the trail to move from the eastern seaboard, across the mountains, and into the fertile Ohio River valley. Then the authors describe the industrialization of Pittsburgh, including its entrepreneurial success stories and related, negative consequences. These consequences included the exploitation of the natural resources, the unfair treatment of labor, and the destruction of natural woodlands to make way for the railroads. Finally, the book concludes on a positive note, describing the recreational bike trail that has replaced the 150 mile railroad line from Cumberland, MD to Pittsburgh, PA. I am looking forward to biking the Great Allegheny Passage later this year. |
