Title: The Beatles Author: Jeremy Robert Genre: Biography 3-5 Theme(s): Chaos and order, Convention and rebellion, Friendship, Success Opening line/sentence: “Except for their guitar, John Lennon and Paul McCarthy didn’t seem to have much in common when they met that hot summer in Liverpool.” Brief Book Summary: This book is a biography of The Beatles. The reader will know how The Beatles got started and how they came to an end. This book includes many details of The Beatles lives that are a shock to many unfamiliar fans. Professional Recommendation/Review #1: Roberts, Jeremy The Beatles Though centuries may separate the subjects of the volumes in this series, all have played prominent political or cultural roles. Their life stories are relayed in sometimes rushed prose, but these books will make acceptable starting points for those seeking basic biographical information. The texts are accompanied by average-quality photos and historical reproductions in black and white and in color. (The Horn Book Guide Online) Professional Recommendation/Review #2: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D. (Children's Literature) The Beatles are unique in the history of music. They defined the generation of the 1960s' changing hairstyles, clothing preferences and attitudes about drugs and spiritual practices, as well as revolutionizing the music industry. The enduring success of the Beatles is explored and defined in this condensed historical narrative. Roberts packs a lot of information into this short book. The formation of the group, the influence of their manager Brian Epstein, their rise to hysterical fame and their pursuit of individual paths after the group disbanded are all covered in a readable fashion. File photographs contribute to the authenticity and factual insets provide helpful background information. An index aids in finding specific data. A list of sources, a bibliography and a discography are included for those who want to study the group in more depth. (CLCD) Response to Two Professional Reviews: The first review, from The Horn Book Guide Online, did not seem like they liked the book, which I have to disagree. I thought the pictures were a great way to bring the reader back to that time period. The second review, written by Phyllis Kennemer, had a lot more detail about what the book had to say. This review grasped the importance of the text, which is really valued by fans. Evaluation of Literary Elements: The pictures in this book brought readers back in time to the era The Beatle were famous. With pictures of the band and the fans, it gave the reader an insight into their crazy lives. The text was also appropriate, using captions for each picture, and the text being large enough that it did not overwhelm the reader. Consideration of Instructional Application: In the book they discuss the audio technology and how it is a lot different today then it was many years ago. I would have my students research what music technology they used to record The Beatles music and make a Venn-diagram of how it is different from our music recording today. This is an interesting way for students to understand technology better and allow them to use a computer for research.

The Beatles: Music Revolutionaries USA TODAY Lifeline Biographies Jeremy Roberts (2011) This book offers a good historical perspective on the Beatles. How were they formed? Who discovered the band? Who was the fifth Beatle? The book covers their careers from the early days before they actually formed the Beatles to the remaining members currently alive and performing. John, Paul, George, and Ringo are seen as individuals, not just members of one of the world’s most famous bands. The author does a nice job of emphasizing the role society played in making them into the icons they are today. Their influence on culture and the music industry is discussed in depth. Interspersed with the research are great photos of the band members and the group throughout their long history, in addition to newspaper articles featuring the Beatles over the years. This book would be a good addition for a collection on music or for use in a biographical section. The layout is user friendly, and the information is appropriate for grades 7-12.
