Abraham Lincoln: A Life of Respect gives a brief insight to Lincoln’s life and his monumental accomplishments, such as abolishing slavery. It gives brief facts about things such as when Lincoln got elected for president, when the Civil War started/ended, and when the Thirteenth Amendment was added to the Constitution. This is a perfect short book for a brief history lesson that encompasses the 1800’s. The book also dives briefly into some fun facts about Lincoln, such as how he is on the penny and how he only went to school for about one year. While I know this is a children’s book, I feel as though some information could’ve been expanded on so that the reader knew a bit more information. Each sentence is very short which is fitting for a lower level reader, but as an adult I would’ve liked to have seen more facts about Abraham Lincoln’s accomplishments.

This book is about Abraham Lincoln and his role during the Civil War. Lincoln and the Civil War is a major tuning point in our country's history, especially for African American. I do not want my students to miss why the African Americans in the South were discriminated. They need to know the source and all the key steps along the way to the Civil Right Movement in the 1960s. I would use this book in a small group reading where I can make connections to other historical leaders.
