Title: "Face to Face with Polar Bears" Author: Norbert Rosing with Elizabeth Carney Illustrator: Genre: Photographic Essay Theme(s): polar bears, wilderness Opening line/sentence: "One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears." Brief book summary: This book talks all about polar bears. They habitat, what they eat, having babies, fighting, and what global warming is doing to them Professional Recommendation/Review #1: Lois Spangler (National Science Teachers Association (NSTA)) National Geographic's Face to Face With Animals series is written from the point of view of a nature photographer. Each book contains animal information and outstanding animal photography. Readers will learn about the field of animal study with emphasis on animal observation techniques. The books contain great vignettes about the photographer's field experiences along with information about protecting the animal's habitat. Interesting sections such as "Facts at a Glance," "Tips from the Expert," and "How You Can Help" will reinforce concepts presented throughout the books. Readers interested in learning about using photography as a method of documenting animal characteristics and behavior will find the "Research and Photographic Notes" to be of interest. This book provides readers with many interesting facts about polar bears, a species that is critically endangered because of global warming. Characteristics are explained in a simple, straightforward manner. Readers will learn about diets, habitats, ranges, life cycle, numbers and species, special features, and threats. Readers will also learn interesting facts about the bear's skin and hair as it relates to the bear's color. Students are encouraged to conduct their own observations in a section titled "It's Your Turn." I highly recommend this 32-page book to elementary classroom teachers and students interested in animal study and their conservation. Students in grades 3 through 6 should be able to easily read this material independently. Middle school teachers using differentiated instructional strategies will also find this book useful.Younger students in high reading groups will be able to read this material independently or with limited help. This would be an excellent book for teachers to use as part of their units when teaching animal observation skills. I also recommend this book to teachers and students interested in photography. Grades K-4. 2007, National Geographic Society, 32p, $16.95. Ages 5 to 10. (PUBLISHER: National Geographic ;Ragged Bears [distributor] (Washington D.C.:) (Enfield:), PUBLISHED: 2007.) Professional Recommendation/Review #2: Willis R. McPherson (The Lorgnette - Heart of Texas Reviews (Vol. 20, No. 1)) When people see the words National Geographic Society on a book, they have come to expect great photos, and this book is filled with them. Big, beautiful, and enlightening photos of polar bears in their natural habitat accompanied by informative, entertaining, and concisely written text bring the reader face-to-face with these fascinating animals. Polar bears (and all arctic wildlife) are threatened by global warming, and this book provides an easily understood explanation of that process and suggests ways that everyone can help with prevention, but it doesn t dwell on the subject. The authors ask the readers many thought-provoking questions, such as what would they need to take with them in addition to cameras on a photographic mission to the arctic and where would they look to find polar bears hunting seals. A section entitled Facts at a Glance lists the bear s size, measurements, life span, population, habitat, and range. There is a glossary and an index as well as recommended books, websites, and places to visit. The cover on this book will make students want to open it; once they do, they won't put it down until they've finished it, and the back cover will make them laugh. (Face To Face). Nonfiction, Highly Recommended. Grades 6 and up. 2007, National Geographic, 32p., $16.95. Ages 11 up. (PUBLISHER: National Geographic ;Ragged Bears [distributor] (Washington D.C.:) (Enfield:), PUBLISHED: 2007.) Response to Two Professional Reviews: Both reviews highly recommend this book for children in elementary school. I agree! I loved reading this book, even the kid I babysit read this and loved it. It's nice and different for children to read a book with real pictures rather than just illustrations. The fact that both reviews say that they highly recommend this book means that it must be great, and it was! Evaluation of Literary Elements: The story is educational but not hard to comprehend. The writer put the story into terms that younger students can understand. There are even words in there that he defines right on the text just to make sure the reader is getting everything out of the book that they should be. Consideration of Instruction Application: Have the students do research on their favorite animal. As the do research, have them set up a book that it similar to this. Talking all about the animal while including pictures. Doing this they are working on their writing and researching skills on something they are passionate about.

Professional nature photographer Norbert Rosing presents excellent photographs of polar bears in their natural habitat napping, playing, swimming, eating, and more. The accompanying text combines solid scientific information on the bears and Rosing's personal experiences in photographing them. The large print and considerable white space work nicely with the large photos, creating instant visual appeal. Useful appendices include sections on how readers can help fight global warming, how to photograph polar bears on your own, "Facts at a Glance" and "Find Out More."
