Review # 1 was written on 2015-09-11 00:00:00 Rhoderick Patricio Do not read this book first. If you're a scholar you almost certainly know whether you want this or not. If you're a random person reading, you probably don't want it. If you're a fantasy writer doing research, well, it's very very specific, and this is both its virtue and its flaw. I found it deeply illuminating, but a lot of what it was doing was shining light on connections between things I already knew. It's great on patronage systems in Florence, it's great on the way formulaic letters were used, and how formulae evolved over time. The best chapter for me was the one on the concept of honour. This is an academic book, heavy with citations and slightly over heavy for my tastes with sociological tables. It's great at quoting letters that give fascinating glimpses of lives and relationships, and on analysing kinds of relationships and words used -- friendship vs worthiness, and honour vs servant. Kudos for being available as an ebook and not prohibitively expensive. |
