Review # 1 was written on 2014-11-22 00:00:00 Ellen Fitzgerald I can't quite decide how I feel about this book. The readings, let me say first of all, are uniformly excellent. My uncertainty concerns its structure, particularly how its four chapters hang together: one on Gertrude Stein, one of Du Bois, one of Frederick Douglass, and one combining Harriet Wilson and Melville. Stein seems the odd (wo)man out; the division of AfAm and non AfAm seems to split the text as well. I love my grand narratives and all, but this one's combination of wide range and only a few subjects seems to unease me. |
