Review # 1 was written on 2017-11-07 00:00:00 SOCRATES PINTO Interesting and useful, extensive data on life in the Bahamas. The discussion of the task and apprentice system, self-hire by slaves, how it differed from US slavery and the role played by the crops that didn't flourish (cotton, especially) make this an important study. |
Review # 2 was written on 2019-06-10 00:00:00 Bryan Morgan 4.5/5-The only drawbAcks to this book are that it was pretty dry, and the length, but even the length is easily explained because this book goes into such great detail about slave society in Bahia for about 300 years. The book sets the standard for research, and shows how much we can discover about parts of history that we tend to overlook, avoid, or forget. Schwartz shows how slave society in Bahia shaped the rest of Brazilian society in a way that lingers even to today. Very impressive, detailed work. |
