Review # 1 was written on 2012-10-17 00:00:00 Kevin Valdesere I liked this one; it was pretty entertaining for the most part. I thought the mystery and action could have been amped up a little more. When things finally come to a head it was a little anticlimactic and at the very end, so it felt a bit rushed as well. I was also expecting more of a light bulb moment where Finch would realize his feelings for Charlotte, but that never really happened. The whole book is them going on about how things would never work between them, and then all of the sudden the books is almost over and suddenly he proposes. I guess all the issues with the book including his relationship with his father, his relationship with Charlotte, the French spy ring, etc were all drawn out for the entire book and then all of the sudden everything is resolved in the last chapter. Oh, and I kept expecting her ex-fiancé to play a bigger role, I mean it was mentioned on the back of the book so I thought something would come up. But, it ended up being pretty minor and also not brought up until the very end. Hmm, I guess this review is ending up being a bit more negative than I intended. Overall, I did like it. I thought the characters were nice enough, but to be honest I don't think it really stood out to me and will probably be a bit forgettable. Content: Clean, mild talk of mistresses.

Review # 2 was written on 2011-06-22 00:00:00 Kyle Colfer With a little more substance in terms of plot than many other Regencies, this book was a quick and enjoyable read. Finch is a likeable hero who comes to see his long-time acquaintance and new correspondence secretary Charlotte for the worthy, honest, and honorable young lady that she is. There wasn't much suspense in Charlotte's "development" of her feelings (because she has harbored a tendre for him since her youth). Nevertheless, the smuggling/spy plot which dominates the story keeps one well entertained. Do not be fooled by the back of the cover, which says incorrectly that they meet on a London street (and thus impliedly sets the story in London); the majority of the book is set in the small town where the two protagonists grew up.
