Desperate to prove she can run her father's business, spoiled Meryl bets against family friend Joseph Hammond that her proposal will win out against his after they journey, cross country, for their presentations, both hoping to win a position with her father's company. Meryl was strong, but selfish and naive, and I couldn't believe a father in 1898 would allow his daughter to travel across the nation like that, at 21 years old. I did like that her feelings flip-flopped as she matured, a bit, and realized her feelings. But she was often annoying, the old rivalry between them was over-used and too forced. It didn't make sense that this would still come up so often once they were both grown - or at least not the way it was written here. Also, both characters were so childish that I lost any concern I might have previously had as to whether they ended up together or not. Joseph had interesting points, but his desire to supposedly please her father, who had helped him, was contradicted by his selfish and reckless behavior. The competition between them was understandable, to a point, but his leaving her alone in a dangerous place in a strange town far from home, with little money went beyond what this plotline could justify, in terms of Joseph's character. He came off as immature, reckless and ignorant, instead of just annoyed with her and longing to best her, especially as he already seemed confident he would do just that upon their arrival. While it started off well enough, I no longer cared by the end. The story line, and the characters, were overdone.

I agree with the preview review. The characters were selfishes, immatures and egoccentrics, Joseph was detestable when he doubted Meryl's capabilities, and Meryl was detestable when she disqualified their night together as "just sex". In the end, they deserved one to each other, but in the worst sense of this phrase.
