I began this book thinking it would cover the tale of the men surveying the route of the Canadian Pacific. It is a journal of the man in charge of the supplies needed by the men scouting for the paths thru the Canadian Rockies that the railroad would use. The last half of the book tells the story of his, and a companions, almost two year trip thru the wilderness to reach home from their camp. Crossing wild rivers and running out of food. Interesting story from a historical perspective, but no "railroad" history per se. It was still an interesting first person accounting of life in the 19th century Canadian wilderness.

A very interesting Memoir by a Royal engineer surveying the Route for the Canadian Pacific Railway. He kept a wonderful diary detailing the lives of his men and himself and leaving nothing out. Anyone who has traveled through the Canadian Rockies by train which is the Route he surveyed is amazed by the engineering feat which was accomplished and makes me proud to be a Canadian.
