Review # 1 was written on 2018-01-03 00:00:00 Timothy Corcoran An interesting book on the terrible plight of destitute children in 19th-century England. (The word "Victorian" doesn't really fit, though; most of what Duckworth writes about is from before Victoria took the throne.) Loads of primary sources are quoted here. You learn about the social/economic conditions that left children with pretty much no choice but to turn to crime, children being punished the same ways as adults (fines, prison hulks, transportation, etc), and efforts at rehabilitation of children. Of course, those problems are still very much in existence today. What the book lacks, however, is an argument. Most historical texts have the author trying to prove a point, but I couldn't find any in this book. I kept thinking to myself: Okay, what is she getting at here? It was vaguely frustrating.

Review # 2 was written on 2009-12-21 00:00:00 Shivanth Bhaskaran بعيدًا عن القصتين الأقل من عاديتين، الترجمة قتلت العمل شر قتلة، وكأن المترجم قرأ القصة أو سمعها من أحدهم ثم كتبها بأسلوبه الخاص المتكلف للغاية والمليء بالسجع المنفر الغير ملائم للقصة ولكلمة ترجمة بشكل عام، وصل تدخل المترجم في السرد لدرجة أنه أضاف بيتًا من الشعر من عنده بالتأكيد ليس له وجود في النص الأصلي، وما زاد من تطفله على النص أنه كان يسب ويلعن الشخصيات السيئة في القصتين، فما أن ياتي ذكر أحدهم حتى يلحقه بدعوة ( لعنة الله عليه ) وكأنه يحكي عن كفار قريش!، لذا، أكتفي بنجمتين لأجل ضحيتين حقيقيتين دافعتا عن شرفهما حتى الموت في زمنِ بعيد كان بالتأكيد أقل بؤسًا من زمننا الحالي الذي قل فيه من يعرف معنى الشرف. تمت
