Review # 1 was written on 2013-01-26 00:00:00 Michael Baca On the whole, this one wasn't the best. It reads more flow-of-consciousness than I wanted from a book intending to examine the portrayal of young women in the media, and the author tended to... I'm not sure how to put it, but she was sort of creating her own brands. She kept using the term "Maiden USA" through the course of the book, or just "Maiden", and eventually I found myself thinking "Ok, yes, you came up with a very clever turn of phrase. Now STOP USING IT." The flow of consciousness style of writing didn't fit well with the material. It made the content difficult to follow, so I wasn't entirely sure, by the end, of the point she was trying to make. |
Review # 2 was written on 2014-04-10 00:00:00 Comer Allen Wow, I really made this one last, ha! It's an interesting read - I think my Film and TV friends would perhaps find it quite helpful. I was particularly interested in her reading of girlhood as phenomenon of media culture. Though, I think how long it took me to (finally) finish this one might speak to my overall thoughts, if even only subconsciously! |
