Review # 1 was written on 2012-12-31 00:00:00 Michael Bagley I wouldn’t recommend this for the causal reader. I read it after some traditional narratives of French history and it provided an academic perspective on those narratives—showing how ideas about French economics and politics have changed over the last 200 years. It was a great peep into French historiography for someone who doesn’t do French history, but who can see all the parallels with Atlantic world history over the last 200 years. All the chapters are stand alone essays analyzing views of French identity, economic progress, etc. most quite readable if you’re already familiar with the theories and basic timeline. So not for everyone. |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-10-27 00:00:00 Michael Foster A very good piece of sports history that tells a story of French rugby as urban upper class in Paris and resolutely rural in the south and west. France, the only really significant non-English speaking rugby nation (OK – South Africa only gets half-way there), is a sports enigma: Dine takes us a good way towards an explanation. |
