The war in southwest virginia 1861-65, by Gary C. Walker is one hundred and sixty five pages of in depth history of what the American civil war did to the southwestern virginia area.I give This book a four, Because of its detail and explanations it provides a great read for most but not all readers. If the reader is already informed about the civil war and has a knowledge base to pull from then the book will score a ten out of ten. With multiple chapters for each year of the war; fully divulging into battles such as little wytheville and salem salt works. The book also includes the aftermath of these battles and the effect on everything from the war as a whole to the communities around the battle. The book provides a window into the daily life of soldiers on both sides telling of equipment, food rations, and morale. The relationships and history of generals also explained and the reasons for who why and what they fought for. All of these factors come together and will entice any reader with a curiosity for Virginia, civil war, or American history. On the other hand if the reader is just starting to learn about the civil war the then the material may seem difficult to follow. With all the detail the material can be challenging if you have no prior knowledge of the civil war. An understanding of the area can also be helpful when following the generals through the mountain passes and hollers of southwest virginia. As for me the book was a very good read with my knowledge of the area and my civil war background I enjoyed the book, but, I again would only recommend it to people who have previous knowledge of the civil war.

Had no idea about this group of Southerners who emigrated to Brazil after the Civil War. Very interesting topic.
