Review # 1 was written on 2013-05-17 00:00:00 Christine Dubay This book traces the importation of vernacular building traditions from the southern United States to Africa, namely Liberia, when African Americans settled there. The strongest way used to do this is a series of photos taken in the southern U.S. and Liberia that clearly demonstrate similarities between the built environment in both places. If you're considering this book, you'll likely recall that one approach that was considered involving freed African Americans during the 1800s was their reestablishment in Africa. Liberia was one those attempts. In addition to the consideration of the architecture, this book considers that reestablishment and its ramifications. |
