This is a fantastic book on the music of Northeast Brazil. It is broke down into three sections. To accompany the text there are numerous black and white images, including a map of the country showing all the major states and cities (which is often overlooked in other books). First, a background of the music. This gives a clear and detailed understanding of the country's history, and an introduction to the concepts and ideas which will be discussed and addressed throughout the book. The second section focuses on creating music in Brazil. A list of the instruments used, examples of rhythmic patterns and tabled chronological timelines of the musics are included. All of which accompany a detailed account and analysis of Afro-Brazilian music through its various incarnations. Lastly there are couple of case studies, as well as a chapter on the modernization of Afro-Brazilian music since the 1970s. The inclusion of the 14 track cd is a great bonus, as you don't have to go far to hear the examples which are mentioned in the text. This book is very good for what it is and is very well written, if you have an interest in Afro-Brazilian music or if you are studying it - this is the first book you should go for.

I've turned to this book time and again...as a voice teacher I've used it to help me know the origins and thoughts behind the songs written by the composer. It's fun to read the dual-language version and see things in the original French (but have the comfort of a really good English translation side-by-side). I love Poulenc's songs, and I appreciate this great resource book for singers and singing teachers.
